The original D2 requirements were much easier to meet. The new version has a much better look to it. Given that the original ran with just 8 MB of RAM, modern systems are much more capable.
The baseline for CPU is a long way off from the Pentium 233 in the modern era. Players will need an i3-3250 if they’re on Intel. That 2013 LGA1155 part is way out of spec for any modern games, so any system built in the last five years should be fine. AMD users will once again have to rely on the FX-era if they are on a budget.
The new version certainly is based on the old code to some degree, but it’s not a one-to-one port. This means that it is not the same game we’ve known all these years, though it may look the same. The important thing to note is that the gameplay is the same, but the backend and network code is very different. That means that players will have to adjust.
The GPU is also a pretty easy target to hit, even given the current nightmare difficulty of the market. A GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7850 is all that’s needed. These cards from roughly 2012 are blown out of water by today’s offerings. If you’ve got anything made after that with at least 4 GB of VRAM, you should be fine to run D2R.
Online characters cannot be imported: “There are profound differences between the modern Battle.net of today and the platform we launched with Diablo 2 all those years ago,” Blizzard said.
