Civilization VI was a bit of a surprise when it was announced for the Switch. Then again, any console port of complex strategy titles is always a bit of a surprise to me. Given how much has to be stripped out for the genre to work sometimes, it’s incredible that consoles have come so far that console versions of incredibly deep strategy games can be so robust. Although it now seems that the Switch port of the strategy game is having some problems.
The recent 1.2.1 patch looks to have caused major bugs across multiple areas of the game. It appears as though Civilization VI crashes right before victory is achieved in this version. Other issues like application hangs are also being reported. Lots of people are reporting the problem, and it appears to be affecting all types of special victory. These kinds of bugs are sometimes unavoidable for one reason or another, although it’s always sad when they happen. It’s basically rendered games unwinnable for many players. Victory conditions in Civilization are always a big time sink for players, so losing all of that progress to an inescapable crash is pretty disheartening.
And, in the Gathering Storm mode, there are bugs being showcased as well. The World Congress screen is causing infinite hangs for some users, and it’s seemingly much more random than the aforementioned issues. And it appears to be a hard lock, as one player is stuck when the game nears nine hundred turns.
Firaxis Games and 2K Games are aware of the problems and are working on solutions. The company has suggested those wishing to file more thorough reports contact the developer and publisher through their support ticket system. Ostensibly, if this is a part of the 1.2.1 update, we should see a patch coming quite soon to address any underlying problems. Although there could be some bad news as well. If the problem is more endemic to the platform, we may not see a full patch, but instead performance optimizations to make these bugs less likely to appear.
Civilization VI is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch.
