Commandos 2: HD Remaster is launching today on Steam. The teams at Kalypso Media and Yippee! Entertainment have been working quietly on the remaster for a while. The redone version has all the strategy game goodness from the original franchise, done up for an upgrade in 2020. The Commandos 2: HD Remaster has the same story setup from the original game. The basic strategy of taking a group of commandos through various dangerous missions is as fun as ever.
In terms of changes, it’s mostly visual. There have been some changes to controls and backend code to make modern hardware more compatible with the aging strategy game. Gameplay has been tweaked in some areas though. There’s new tutorials and a remade UI to modernize the experience as a whole. The core of the changes are a complete HD overhaul for both the campaign missions and the skirmish maps. This makes the background visuals much more crisp, so that’s nice.
Initially released in 2001, and developed by Pyro Studios, Commandos 2 was a high mark for both the genre and the franchise. The original game reviewed well on PC but never really grew beyond that. Aside from small dedicated PC fanbase, pretty much no one in the modern era had even hear of the original game nor the remake.
Commandos 2: HD Remaster will launch on Steam later today and is due to arrive on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sometime in Spring. Check out the trailer for the remastered version down below.
