Chinese FF14 players are eating ungodly amounts of chicken

Final Fantasy XIV

So there’s another food-based game promotion that’s tied into a popular MMORPG. This time it’s KFC teaming up with Square Enix to offer a special in-game item in the Chinese market. Players in the Chinese version of the popular MMO can earn a fat black chocobo mount by eating a truly insane amount of chicken products from KFC.

Final Fantasy 14 previously offered this item as a bonus in collaboration with Amazon, where people in the US and other areas could just buy something off of Amazon and claim the bonus mount. This latest collaboration is just a whole step beyond that into crazy land. Here’s what the total package includes in each meal, and keep in mind that each person wishing to claim a code must complete this insanely huge amount of eating:

  • 1 Double Chicken Burger
  • 1 Vegan Mushroom Burger
  • 1 5-piece Chicken Nuggets
  • 2 Original Recipe Chicken
  • 1 2-piece New Orland Chicken Wings
  • 1 Old Beijing Spicy Duck Roll
  • 2 Pepsi (Large)
  • 2 Peach Oolong Tea (Large)

There are even some reports and images being shared online, showing the challenge that is eating all of this food, and it’s totally nuts. The sheer volume of food alone is too much for one person, but KFC is making it truly difficult. There’s even one report of someone who went to the restroom mid-attempt, only to find their partially completed meal replaced with a fresh one. And it’s important to finish all the food because KFC employees in China are only handing over the code for the mount once all of the food is consumed.

Most people wouldn’t go to these extreme degree just for a video game item, at least in a sane universe one would think. But food and video game promotions have been a pretty regular fixture within the industry, with lots of retail collabs giving away free XP in some games, and of course rather infamous sponsorship deals like the Doritos Pope.
