CCP announces EVE Echoes, full mobile title, alpha invites open

EVE Echoes Teaser Trailer

CCP has just released a new trailer for a new game, and EVE Online fans are very underwhelmed. What was originally teased as Infinite Galaxy now known as EVE Echoes.

Check out the teaser down below.

As it doesn’t contain any actual gameplay, we’re left to nothing but speculation until the first gameplay footage is released, and since I assume the alpha is under some kind of NDA for now, that may take a while. But if I had to hazard a guess, we’re about to see an EVE-like version of that god-awful Command & Conquer: Rivals. So EVE Echoes might turn out to be a simple team-based battler with EVE ships. Very much not what hardcore fans of the space opera are looking for.

This game was actually announced a while ago during a fan convention, but we’ve heard almost nothing about it until now. It’s pretty clear though that this won’t be EVE for hardcore fans, and that it’s very much targeted at the booming mobile market in China and Korea. And given that CCP is now owned by Pearl Abyss, this seems like a logical assumption given their focus on the region.

And yes, it’s developed by NetEase, the same Chinese developer that partnered with Blizzard on Diablo Immortal. You know, that infamously panned mobile Diablo title that kicked off a wave of backlash for both companies. And judging from the reaction of the EVE community, things aren’t looking much better this time around. The general reaction is pretty muted, with many hardcore EVE players feeling like this game is flat out not what they wanted, and that they’re giving it a hard pass.

And with the cancellation of the FPS project, Project Nova, fans are less than hopeful about the quality of the final game, but we will just have to wait and see.

EVE Echoes does not have a firm release date yet, but if you’re curious, you can sign up for the alpha on the official site. The game is due for Android and iOS.
