Bandai Namco buys minority stake in Tropico 6 developer, Limbic Entertainment

Bandai Namco

Bandai Namco has acquired a minority stake in the German developer behind the Tropico series, as well as other games. Details and value of the deal were not disclosed.

The German studio is well-known for some classic franchises, and not just satirical strategy games. They also worked on Might & Magic some. The legacy of 6 Tropico games is a pretty good thing to have, and it seems to have worked out well for Limbic. The company appeared to be pretty happy about the deal, although terms were not disclosed.

Following this deal, the company will develop two new franchises for Bandai Namco, although no details have been revealed. This is all very much inline with the strategy Bandai Namco has been pursuing for some time. The Japanese publisher and developer has been wanting to pivot outside of Japan and force its way into more games and genres. This deal will help them do that.

With Bandai Namco’s support behind them, Limbic can pivot into some other interesting markets and ideas. Having financial backing and experience to lean on can really help in game development. It will be interesting to see just what Limbic Entertainment is able to do from this improve position within the market.

Game development has not been easy in 2020 or 2021. The looming pandemic has caused a great many delays and altered everyone’s plans. Bandai Namco and many other companies in the space canceled plans for new releases and physical events all across the globe.
