Attack of the Earthlings, the newly announced game from Wales Interactive and Team Junkfish, is coming to PS4 and Xbox One. The game has already amassed a following after its PC launch, but now the console port stands to overwhelm gamers in an alien tide as well.
The setup is very simple, being that it’s a turn-based strategy title. The human race is battling an aggressive new menace, the alien Swarmers. And in a bit of twist, you’re actually the bad guys. Typically in these narratives you assume some fictitious military command and attempt to save humanity, but not here. The gameplay blends heavily with this idea of flipping things on their head, as the turn-based mechanics often have multiple slimy alien wrenches thrown into them. Your alien hosts have to consume the encroaching humans of the Galactoil Corporation and use their biomass to build new units. And unlike the horrifying reflection that is the Tyranid from Warhammer 40K, the Swarmers are a bit nicer about extermination.
The tone is something special as well, as Attack of the Earthlings seeks to induce gut-busting laughter from the outset by taking a very tongue-in-cheek approach to alien invasions and genocide. The players has to defend the alien homeworld after all, so it’s up to you to figure out how best to do that. You have multiple decisions to make, and the main human antagonists, PA Pecker and RM Dickinham, will try to thwart your defensive efforts. Luckily for the alien menace though, replayability is the name of the game, so you have plenty of tries to get it right.
Team Junkfish had attended EGX, hoping to show off their new game. The publisher set out to help the developer bring the game to a wider audience following that moment. According to Richard Pring, Co-founder and Technical Director at Wales Interactive, the publisher knew that they had something special:
“We instantly fell in love with the darkly comedic theme of aliens vs humans with a twisted spin on the genre. We’re proud to have a wide variety of genres on our games label, with Attack of the Earthlings filling that strategy gap. It’s a pleasure to see our first turn-based strategy game picking up the Best Strategy Game nomination at the TIGA Games Industry Awards 2018.”
